Today, we're exploring the Canadian education system, a diverse learning landscape from early childhood to higher education. In Canada, children typically start school at 5 or 6, beginning with Kindergarten. From there, they progress through primary and secondary education, which concludes with the end of high school at around 18 years old. International students under 18 can join the school system at any level, integrating into Canadian schools and benefiting from a supportive and inclusive environment.
Upon completing high school, students in Canada have a multitude of pathways available to them. International students over 18 have several options open to them. They can attend universities renowned for their research prowess and scholarly depth, offering undergraduate, master's, and doctoral degrees across a wide range of disciplines. Alternatively, University Colleges blend academic programmes with practical skills training, offering a unique combination that prepares students for advanced study and the workforce. Community and Technical Institutes provide hands-on learning in specialised fields such as engineering, healthcare, and information technology. These institutions are ideal for those seeking to gain practical skills and enter the workforce directly after their studies. Career colleges focus on vocational training, offering courses in hospitality, business, and trades designed to equip students with the skills needed for immediate employment.

Today, we're exploring the Canadian university sector – a destination known for its high-quality education and diverse academic programmes.
Canadian universities offer a comprehensive range of programmes at undergraduate, postgraduate, and PhD doctoral levels across various subjects. Whether you are interested in engineering, arts, sciences, business, or healthcare, you'll find a programme that suits your aspirations.
The entry requirements for international students considering undergraduate studies are similar to those for community colleges. If you're from West Africa and hold a WAEC or NECO certificate or from Kenya with a KCSE, you'll need to ensure your grades meet the programme-specific requirements. Students from Southern Africa with GCSE, IGCSE, or Ay Levels, as well as those from Francophone countries with a High School diploma or IB, are also eligible. Each university may have slightly different criteria, so checking their specific requirements is essential.
For those pursuing a master's degree, you can apply with a bachelor's degree obtained abroad or from your home country. Canadian universities value diverse academic backgrounds and recognise international qualifications.
PhD doctoral applicants need a master's degree and a robust undergraduate degree. A comprehensive PhD proposal outlining your intended research area is also crucial for your application.

Hello, I'm Tim Hunt, Managing Director of World Student Advisors. Welcome to another 90SecondAdvisors podcast. Today, we’re discussing how international students can choose the right undergraduate degree in Canada, a crucial decision that can shape your future.
Do you know what you want to study at ages between 18 and 20? If you do, that is fair enough, but you are with the majority if you are unsure. How do you decide which subject to study? A good starting point is to look at your high school results. Are you good at chemistry, maths, and physics? Are you artistic? Can you draw? Are you creative? Are you a social science student who excels in English, history and geography? Your subject profile will indicate what you are naturally good at and what you are most likely to enjoy studying.
Over the years, I’ve advised many students. I’ve met parents who want their child to become a doctor or engineer, even when the student excels at Art, English and history. While parents have good intentions, it’s crucial for students to study something they enjoy and are passionate about. You'll be learning this subject for three or four years, so imagine waking up every morning dreading attending lectures. That’s not a recipe for success.
Number one tip: be interested in and enjoy your subject, and always play to your academic strengths. If you're not good at maths and don’t enjoy it, that doesn’t mean you’re not intelligent. Everyone has different aptitudes. The secret is to find out what really interests you and you find engaging.
Another consideration is to look at where the jobs and exciting careers are. Artificial intelligence, for instance, is a booming field right now. However, not every student will study AI – it depends on your science qualifications and interest in the subject.
Art is another contentious area. Most parents might want their children to study something other than an art-related course as they cannot see the career prospects. But if you can draw and are creative, you can apply this fantastic talent in many ways. Think about product design—everything from a pencil to a chair to a rocket to the moon is designed. Being able to draw is a fantastic talent, as is having a conceptual idea and being able to create an image. For example, website design is the meeting of technical and artistic skills.
So, let’s recap. Look at your high school profile and choose a course that matches your strengths and interests. Choose a subject that you enjoy. Make sure you know where the jobs are upon graduation, and never let anyone tell you you're not good because there's one subject you find difficult. You are not alone; very few people excel in all subjects. Each talent, whether it's in art, science, or humanities, can be applied to a worthwhile career.
Chat with me, the Managing Director of World Student Advisors, or one of my excellent team members, and we will help you move in the right direction. Canada may have skill shortages, so this is another factor to consider when selecting your course – with one caveat: you must enjoy studying the subject! Remember, we are here to support you every step of the way.
World Student Advisors are the number one choice for help and advice in selecting a course of study and university. Hello, I'm Tim Hunt, Managing Director of World Student Advisors. Welcome to another 90SecondAdvisor podcast. Today, we're discussing how international students can choose the right master's degree in Canada—a crucial decision that can shape their future.
A master's degree can open doors to high-level jobs, with many employers making a master's degree mandatory. It also significantly boosts your earning potential and career trajectory. The Canadian university sector offers numerous master's degree study options, and I invite you to consider three approaches to selecting your master's degree.
Firstly, the progression route. You follow your master's degree in the same subject area as your undergraduate degree. For example, if you have an undergraduate law degree (LLB), you might progress to a master's in law (LLM). Similarly, an undergraduate degree in computing could lead to a master's in a computing-related study area.
Secondly, widening your knowledge base. Imagine you have an LLB but aren't keen on becoming a lawyer. Instead, you choose an MBA in Finance. This broadens your knowledge base, making you proficient in law, management, and finance, increasing your employability.
The third option is to specialise. For instance, you have an undergraduate degree in business management and decide to study international relations at the master's level, then apply for an internship with the UN. What a career move! Alternatively, consider a master's in Construction Project Management. With the constant need for building, you should always be at work!
Another tip is to select a master's programme with a work placement. This offers numerous advantages:
Gaining work experience for your CV.
Applying the theories you've been taught.
Potentially securing a job offer.
Possibly write your dissertation based on real-life problems identified at your work placement employer.
So, the critical question is, which master's subject should you study?
If you'd like to discuss your choices, my team at World Student Advisors and I are here to help. All students are allocated an Application Manager to assist with university selection, application processes, and student visa support.

Hello, this is Tim Hunt, Managing Director of World Student Advisors, and welcome to another insightful episode of our 90-second Advisor podcast.
Today, we'll be delving into the world of Canadian PhD programmes, covering entry requirements, programme duration, and career prospects within the academic research environment.
To embark on a PhD in Canada, students typically need a relevant master's degree and a well-defined research proposal. It's crucial to select a university with research interests that align with your area. The application process is very different from a taught master's programme, requiring a principal supervisor and supporting staff for your research.
PhD students are expected to make a new contribution to knowledge. Their research area must be unique, often focusing on a narrow field but conducting a deep investigation, ultimately becoming world experts in their field.
PhD programmes in Canada generally span between three to five years, depending on the area of study and research progress.
A PhD from Canada equips graduates with advanced research skills, opening doors to careers in academia, industry, and beyond. Canada's vibrant research community and supportive academic environment contribute to a rich experience for PhD candidates.
World Student Advisors have many years of experience supporting PhD applicants. Each applicant will have their own World Student Advisors application manager, who will assist throughout the process, including visa support.
World Student Advisors are the number one choice for helping PhD applicants. With our expertise, we manage your application, ensure you meet the English language requirements, and support you with your visa application, giving you the confidence to pursue your academic journey in Canada.

How to apply for a Canadian Study Visa, known as a Study Permit. Hello, this is Tim Hunt, Managing Director of World Student Advisors. Welcome to another informative episode of our 90-second Advisor podcast. Today, we're explaining how to apply for a Canadian Study Visa. Firstly, the visas available for students in Canada are called study permits, which allow international students to study at designated learning institutions (DLIs). This study permit typically covers the length of the programme plus an additional 90 days. There are two ways to apply for your visa: firstly, online or by visiting your nearest Visa Application Centre (VAC). Let’s take a look at the online application process. Most students apply directly through the Government of Canada’s official website. Here is the link to apply for a Canadian study permit. https://ircc.canada.ca/english/information/applications/student.asp. Alternatively, you can apply through a Visa Application Centre (VAC). Here is the link to find your nearest VAC: https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/corporate/contact-ircc/offices/find-visa-application-centre.html . Most students are asked to provide biometrics, including fingerprints and a photograph, which can be done at a VAC. Here is a link to find out if you need to provide Biometrics and where your nearest VAC is located: https://ircc.canada.ca/english/visit/biometrics.asp. Most applicants are required to attend an interview, here is a link to find your nearest Canadian Embassy or Consulate: https://travel.gc.ca/assistance/embassies-consulates
You are required to provide five documents when applying for your study permit: One. Proof of Acceptance: You will need an acceptance letter from a DLI in Canada. Two. Financial Support Evidence: This includes demonstrating funds for tuition fees, living expenses, and return transportation. You should have sufficient funds to cover tuition fees plus CAD 10,000 per year for living expenses. Three. Bank Statements: You may be required to provide recent bank statements as proof of funds. Four. Valid Passport: Ensure your passport is valid for your stay in Canada. Five. Medical and Police Clearances: Depending on your country of residence, medical examinations and police certificates may be necessary. Lastly, let's look at the costs associated with the visa application: One. The standard fee for a study permit application is CAD 150. Two. The Biometric Fee is CAD 85. Three. We recommend that you budget for medical exams, police certificates, and any other incidental expenses. It can seem difficult if you are learning how to apply for a student visa for the first time. It’s like when anything is new, it takes time to understand the process and what is required. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask me or one of the World Student Advisors team, who have been supporting international students through the Canadian study permit for many years and are happy to assist you in any way possible. If you would like to contact us, please do, here is our email ask@worldstudentadvisors.com or send us a message to our WhatsApp Help Line +4 4 7 9 1 4 7 9 7 8 3 0, or visit our website at www.worldstudentadvisors.com.
